Growing Transparency and Engagement with Manager Communication

With the consumerism of rewards and the increase of employee requests for visibility into their rewards, the need for compensation transparency is at an all-time high. If your employees aren’t asking you directly for this transparency, they likely are seeking it in alternative methods (e.g., water cooler, disengagement, unexpected turnover). The catalyst to transparency in the compensation equation is communication from employees’ management team. However, most organizations admit to an overall lack of training and guidance for managers about how to best communicate and articulate the philosophy behind compensation decisions.

During this conversation, Josh Hill and Lauren Bidwell will provide practical recommendations and advice that you can share with your managers to help with this need for transparency (without divulging everything that makes compensation work).

Joshua (Josh) Hill is a pay-for-performance expert, focusing much of his time and effort in the field of compensation. With more than 16 years of corporate-level, practical experience in the design and administration of global compensation programs, Hill’s experience spans multiple industries including automotive, retail, health care, professional services, and consumer packaged goods. Hill began his career when performance appraisals were originally assigned to the compensation function and the connection between rewards and employee behavior was clear. Staying ahead of rewards and recognition trends is a passion. He received his bachelor’s degree in human resources administration from Western Michigan University, and recently completed his M.S. in administration for human resources from Central Michigan University.

Lauren Bidwell

Research Scientist, Human Capital Management Research | SAP SuccessFactors

Lauren Bidwell, Ph.D., is a research scientist, Human Capital Management Research for SAP SuccessFactors. Her role involves driving innovative thinking and best practices around talent management and the use of technology to support effective talent management decisions. Bidwell has engaged with dozens of customer organizations around the world and is an active author and presenter on topics related to HCM, including team performance, group-based decision making, compensation decisions and collaborative learning. She received her Ph.D. in experimental and decision-making psychology from DePaul University.
