Leadership Conference Wrap-up
The 9th annual Local Network Leadership Conference in May was a huge success with 54 leaders representing 40 groups, including our two Canadian groups and newest partner in Silicon Valley, attending. The one-day meeting focused on networking and local partners learning from each other’s challenges and successes. Topics of discussion ranged from how to appropriately recognize association volunteers to dealing with difficult board members to succession planning.
In addition to the less formal group discussions, the WorldatWork Local Network Leadership team identified some strong leaders, based on a year of engagement with the association, to share their success stories with the entire group. Jason Faris, president of the Greater Toronto Area Rewards Association, offered his story of launching a local association and building membership from zero to 260 in less than a year. View Faris’ presentation.
“Many of the groups had much success to their credit, but maybe they could pick up a few tips that they hadn’t thought of,” Faris said. “There seems to be a lot of common issues that we’re all facing, and WorldatWork set the table so we could all focus on that with plenty of interaction in a safe haven.”
Chris Bailey was another speaker who shared her success story with the group. Drawing on Newton’s first law (a body in motion tends to stay in motion and a body at rest stays at rest), Bailey talked about how difficult it is to develop board leadership when support and interest is on a decline, based on her own experience. As a past president of Central Texas Compensation and Benefits Association, she attended a WorldatWork Local Network Leadership Conference years ago and was impressed by how many groups had a President-Elect position on their boards,, to develop leadership and board continuity. “It’s easier to say you will be one of a really strong team than to recruit someone to do it all on their own,” Bailey said.
That theme of strength in numbers was present to Bailey throughout the day-long conference. “You know that you’re not alone,” she said. “When you join an association, you still have your own professional reputation to uphold, so it might be hard to admit that you don’t know everything. But when everyone gets together here, it creates an open environment and safe place to share ideas and information.”
The networking and celebrating success was also a great benefit for Faris and his still-new group. “It was a great event overall. We’re appreciative that WorldatWork fosters this kind of community,” Faris said. “We celebrated all the positives—there are so many things that we are doing well.”

Total Rewards Goes to Washington
New WorldatWork Office Space to House Training Center, Public affairs, Bookstore and Library
WorldatWork has announced plans to open a Washington, D.C., office and training center in late 2007. As part of the association’s continuing effort to gain more visibility for total rewards and participate more fully in the dialogue with policy makers as it occurs, the association has signed a lease for a 24,000-square-foot office space in the heart of the nation’s capital.
“Now WorldatWork will ‘be there’ representing the profession, providing factual and objective information from practitioners that will help in national policy discussions,” said WorldatWork Board Chair Maggie Gagliardi, CCP. “Over the years we kept hearing from members that you wanted us to participate more fully in the dialogue with policy makers as it occurs and for us to ‘be there’ representing the profession.”
The Washington, D.C. facility will complement the Scottsdale, Arizona-based headquarters. The new office space will feature two state-of-the-art training rooms to host our educational courses. Plans call for a whole host of multimedia equipment including new plasma screens, high-tech sound systems, and video-enabled conference rooms. The training center will host WorldatWork courses throughout the year.
