What Happened at the Leadership Conference?
Networks Looked to the Future
On May 20, 56 local network leaders from 38 networks gathered in Philadelphia for the 10th annual WorldatWork Local Network Leadership Conference. This one-day event focused on helping leaders look to the future to attract and retain committed members and sustain strong local associations.

To start, four panelists led a discussion of hot topics in local network leadership to get from good to great: the importance of a yearly board planning meeting; succession planning; the pros and cons of hiring an administrator; and leveraging sponsorship opportunities. Groups then delved into eight different scenarios of a fictitious association for a case study exercise. The questions, such as how to attract emerging leaders in an association that has many retiring members, were timely and relevant to all. And a keynote presentation by WorldatWork President Anne Ruddy, CCP, made governance, board ethics, regulations and even fiduciary responsibilities entertaining.

A “Let’s Get to the Issue” exercise gave leaders a chance to reflect on their biggest challenge and share common challenges and potential solutions in the group. What they learned won’t be easily forgotten with each attendee given a Roadmap to fill in with personal lessons learned for the purposes of sharing the information with their local board of directors.

If you were unable to attend the Leadership Conference, check out Anne Ruddy’s presentation, the Leadership Roadmap and more resources on the Leadership Conference tab of the Local Network Leaders Web site. If you have ideas to make the relationship betweeen your association and WorldatWork stronger, please contact the Advisory Board member in your region.

Local Network Leader Spotlight: Susan Krynicky
Susan Krynicky, CCP, became a member of the New Jersey Compensation Association because she was interested in expanding both her professional network and her knowledge of compensation issues. An open leadership position in the association offered further development. For Krynicky, serving on the WorldatWork Local Network Advisory Board provides all these opportunities and more.

The director of compensation at Prudential Financial and Northeast region representative of the Local Network Advisory Board said there are good reasons to be involved in a local network as well as WorldatWork. “WorldatWork offers a global perspective, and the local networks are a great way to understand some of the regional things that are going on. You look at it from two different levels.”

As an advisory board member, Krynicky said she aims to strengthen the partnership between WorldatWork and the local groups. She noted the marketing, the Web site and promotions from WorldatWork that offer real benefits to the local networks. And she praised the individual benefits of involvement in both groups.

“It has enhanced my career. There are opportunities for leadership and networking and broadening your knowledge base,” she said. “It’s meant career as well as personal development, because I believe any time you are involved in something like this you are going to get something out of it as an individual.”

Krynicky said the camaraderie of the WorldatWork Local Networks has been one of the biggest benefits to her personally. “WorldatWork provides a great service simply in the opportunity to reach out to other peers. I came to my first Leadership Conference last year and thought, ‘Wow, some of the things that I’m dealing with, other people are dealing with, too.’ There are resources to rely on. The biggest takeaway of that conference was the names to reach out to.”
