WorldatWork Introduces 2009-10 Organizational Strategy
Association Urges Local Network Leaders to Join Us in “Reaching New
Heights Together”

“Reaching New Heights Together” is the theme for the WorldatWork 2009-10 organizational strategy. This year we are deepening our strategic communications to ensure that all partners and local network leaders grasp and engage in our new focus areas. It is especially helpful to understand the importance of our relevance and value, our reach, our content and community and our global market expansion if we are to thrive in the tough economic times ahead and remain “top of mind” to our audiences.

The organization today is on solid footing, and the leadership remains confident that we will flourish in the future, but we can only do so if we continually communicate and familiarize our mission, who we are, what we do, who we serve and our operating philosophy to those on the frontlines of our business.

Please take the time to acquaint yourself with our new interactive Web page and watch the video from Anne Ruddy, WorldatWork President. Our organizational strategy has never been more important. We need everyone to help us reach new heights together. If you have any questions, please contact Meredith Fiebiger at Meredith.Fiebiger@worldatwork.org.

When to Throw Out the Old Plan: Spotlight on Washington Area Compensation & Benefits Association
In an uncertain economy, many compensation and benefits professionals are looking within their local community for confidence and positive indicators. In Washington, D.C., this quest for confidence may be even more earnest as the number of government employees dwarfs any other industry.

“Many of our members are government contractors,” said Theresa Lynch, President of the Washington Area Compensation & Benefits Association and Senior Consultant with Watson Wyatt Worldwide. “We know that certain areas are going to grow because they’re receiving government funds. We can make sure that our focus is aligned with where we think the spending is going to be.”

In January, WACBA conducted a meeting on the downturn and the potential for local members to see hiring freezes, layoffs, changes to merit budgets or something else. “At this kind of meeting, you not only get ideas from the panelists, but you network. You hear from other organizations that might be growing right now, and when you hear that, it can give you hope,” Lynch said.

But to inspire hope and confidence, timing is critical. Introducing a meeting on surviving the downturn meant that the WACBA board actually had to throw away a plan that was introduced the year before. “We planned our January 2009 meeting at the end of 2007, and that plan called for a meeting on global compensation,” Lynch said. “We decided in November 2008 to change that to respond to what our members were going through.”
