WorldatWork President Shares State of the Association
In this issue of Local Network News, we asked WorldatWork President Anne Ruddy, CCP, CPCU, to serve as guest writer and offer her perspective regarding the state of the association and its future focus, especially in a time when so many organizations are changing their business strategies.
Everyone’s top question for the association in the past couple of months has been the same, and I’d be surprised if you weren’t asking. We all want to know what the effect of the economy will mean to you and the association in the future.
I need to start by reminding everyone that 2008 was an exceptional year for WorldatWork. We had more educational participants than ever before — both classroom and virtual, our membership numbers are steady, workspan magazine just published its largest issues ever with strong advertisers, we launched a new Career Center and we know that the decision to open an office and training center in Washington, D.C. was a great one. All of these things are springboards to how good the coming year could be for the association.
We pride ourselves on trying new things to improve business processes and the customer experience. Our global initiatives are introducing WorldatWork education to new regions of the world, and our new approach to certifications lets us give more of a standard to our designees that will mean more to stakeholders. And we’ll be able to develop specialty certifications in the future that really make designees experts.
But we also know that people are worried. Travel budgets are being cut, and training budgets are shrinking. We are watching about 10 million leading indicators every week, and we know that teaching people career development tools and how to do more with less are going to be so important during this time.
For us, it’s about being a good surfer. You never know what the wave’s going to look like, but if you’re a good surfer, you can handle any wave that is out there. We have good surfers here at WorldatWork. And we want you to stay tuned for more details on our organizational strategy and how you will be a part of it.

Spotlight: North Texas Compensation Association 15th Anniversary
On Dec. 4, nearly 100 compensation and total rewards professionals from the Dallas metro area celebrated a significant number and achievement. The North Texas Compensation Association (NTCA) was founded 15 years ago, and after looking to the past, members saw clearly that, though the group has grown, many of the issues it faces remain the same.
“We traced back a history of NTCA for the meeting and invited all of the past presidents and founding board members,” said current president Tonya Bradford, CCP. “The very first NTCA meeting had 120 people in attendance and the challenge was to get the association’s name out to the community as a resource for professionals. Today, we have around 270 members and we deal with the same struggle to increase awareness, especially as people move around from job to job and new professionals come in.”
NTCA Presidents: Amy Creech (Past), Tonya Bradford (Current) and Jeana Smith (Future)
The Dec. 4 meeting featured some highlights from the association’s history and honored those founding members with lifetime memberships. To connect the past and future, the meeting also featured a presentation by WorldatWork director of information development and public affairs Ryan Johnson, CCP, on the changes the HR profession can expect from the Obama administration. “We try to provide up-to-date programming that is beneficial to our members in their jobs. We look at trends, issues in the economy and timing when we plan our meetings and with all the speakers we have,” Bradford, a Towers Perrin consultant, said.
“Normally, after a meeting people will come to me and say it was a good meeting and ‘see you next time.’ This time it was overwhelming,” Bradford said. “I couldn’t tell you how many people said what a great meeting it was and that they noticed the work the board put into it. They liked it all — the history, Ryan’s presentation, the honoring of the founding members. The board members have invigorated the spirit of NTCA, and it is nice to know that the effort is showing to members.”
E-Binders Coming to All Full-Service Local Network Courses
In October, WorldatWork implemented a change to the delivery of course materials to courses hosted by Charlotte Area Compensation Council, Kansas City Compensation & Benefits Association, and Greater Cincinnati Compensation & Benefits Association. This month, the delivery change will be effective for all WorldatWork Local Network full-service courses. Course binders (and BAII calculators, if applicable) will be available for pick up at the event location on your course start date. In addition, attendees will now have the opportunity to access the course binder electronically, as a PDF e-binder. Two weeks prior to the course start date, an e-mail will be sent to attendees with information on how to access the e-binder.
Shipping binders in bulk to the course location and providing an online experience for attendees helps:
- Ease the burden for participants of traveling with a bulky binder
- Eliminate return binder shipping fees for participants who cancel
- Eliminate binder shipping fees for participants registering late
- Continue to offer access to course materials before the start date.
The pilot groups in Charlotte, Kansas City and Cincinnati experienced a smooth transition through this process change, and exam passage rates were not affected by the introduction of e-binders.
