Executive Compensation- Privately Held Company

I am looking for resources to understand different options for executive compensation in privately held family owned organization, for non-family members. Our current phantom plan is being challenged by current executive team. Any resources on line that I can find would be extremely helpful.

Just about any executive compensation consultant should be able to help you.  Almost any article, book or course on executive comp in private firms would have information on alternatives.  "Compensation by Consanguinity" is a recognized characteristic at many closely-held firms where family are owner-officers; the moment an outside mercenary joins their executive team, they must confront the issue.

http://eridlc.com alone has a handful of free one-hour online courses on executive compensation program design, as well as a free online compensation textbook.

I agree with Jim - there are various resources including the ones Jim mentioned or conduct a search at the WorldatWork Bookstore.

This firm, Compensation Resources, has a reasonably priced survey of executive compensation in privately held companies:

Towers Watson has a survey of top mgt compensation at privately held companies: http://www.wwds.com/OurProducts/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=07501&CatID=1

Most of those studies (like Paul Dorf's) focus on how much, while the most critical problem dealing with exec comp in privates is rarely how much but more frequently simply how.  Deciding which mechanisms to use, in what combinations, and over what time frames to accumulate the value the outsider expects, in order to shield them from being recruited away, is the bigger issue.  Every executive has a very good idea of the total remuneration package he or she can command on the open competitive market; but the tools used to construct that package are different in privates than in publics, even though both end up paying pretty much the same norms in TC.

Hi,

I speak and consult frequently on this topic, specifically in the non-cash areas.  The NCEO (www.nceo.org) also has some great resources.
