Here's a Story . . . of a Work-Life forum
April 17, 2012 -- Scottsdale, AZ -- Kathie Lingle, Executive Director of WorldatWork’s Alliance for Work-Life Progress has dubbed this forum an “un-conference”. And what she means by that is this is not your traditional conference. Attendees are going to roll up their sleeves and take an active role. And that’s exactly how this “un-conference” started. With sleeves rolled up and hands in the dirt, attendees volunteered in a community service project at Mary Ellen’s Place here in Phoenix, an affordable housing option for homeless women veterans.
As one of the 7 categories of work-life effectiveness, community involvement can have several meaningful outcomes for both employees and employers such as engagement and a sense of “oneness”. Working elbow to elbow in the dirt was a great way to get to know other attendees, and as some attendees agreed – a great education on the beauty of desert plants.
Fast forward to the opening afternoon session back in the cool sunny Scottsdale venue and we dedicated the rest of the day to hearing from a master storyteller. It’s never just the data that can change one’s mind – but the story that you weave around the data that can create the tipping point you’re looking for when selling a business idea to others – especially those in the Executive offices.
Mark Guterman – Co-founder of MeaningfulCareers.com engaged participants in a highly interactive afternoon exploring how storytelling can be utilized as a powerful tool for sharing experiences, conveying one’s vision, opening dialogue and facilitating change.
According to Kathy Kacher, a work-life thought leader, “one can never underestimate the power of a good story. It’s a great way to get everyone on the same page.”
