Mobile Technology Provides Cost Savings, Increase in Productivity
Oct. 16, 2008 — Employees on the go may be able to realize a productivity gain of nearly an hour per day. A study of federal government employees found that 82% spend work time outside of the office on tasks like telework, travel and off-site meetings; 29% said they spend more time working outside the office now than they did at the same time the year before. Respondents who use a smartphone for work purposes reported an average time savings or productivity gain of 54 minutes per day. According to Telework Exchange, the public-private partnership that examines telework in government and that conducted the survey, the federal government could save approximately $37 million in additional productivity each day by making sure mobile employees have the right mobile tools (based on average federal employee salary of $29 per hour).
“Mobile technology enables employees to work smarter and make the most of their time — regardless if they are a teleworker or mobile worker,” said Cindy Auten, general manager of Telework Exchange. “The study finds that the majority of respondents are already mobile — traveling to and from the office, their home office, meetings, client sites, etc. Mobile technology plays a critical role in empowering employees to remain productive, regardless of their location.”
The study also found:
Just 18% of federal employees work from their office all day, every day. Forty-two percent of respondents telework at least part time. Twenty percent of office-based employees report spending at least a portion of two days per week outside of the office (includes telework, travel, meetings in other locations, etc.).
Only 16% of federal employees give their agency an “A” for equipping employees with mobile tools.
Approximately 1.4 million federal employees spend some time out of the office without the technology to stay connected
